What awaits you in Sitges
Beaches for every taste. Sitges has seventeen beaches. In the centre, along the promenade by the old town, you will find Ribera, one of the busiest beaches, and the family-friendly Sant Sebastià. Families with small children also choose Les Anquines: the beach is tucked between two stone breakwaters, so there are hardly any waves. The coves in Garraf Natural Park, such as Cala Morisca, are wild: a footpath leads to them from the old road, and they are surrounded by rocks.
The old town and museums. The church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla stands above Fragata beach. Next to it are two museums. Cau Ferrat was the home and studio of the artist Santiago Rusiñol, and it holds works by Ramon Casas, El Greco and Picasso. Next door, Maricel brings together ten centuries of art, from Gothic to Modernisme.
Carnival and the film festival. Before Lent, in February or early March, Sitges puts on one of the oldest carnivals in Europe. The main parades are on Sunday during the day and on Tuesday night. In October the town hosts the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia: it has been running since 1968 and calls itself the world's first fantastic film festival. For those weeks, it is best to book your accommodation and transfer in advance.
Places nearby. Close to Sitges are Garraf Natural Park and the Penedès wine region with its wine routes, and along the coast lies the neighbouring town of Vilanova i la Geltrú.
The road from the airport. The C‑32 motorway runs from the airport to Sitges, so there is no need to go through Barcelona. Closer to Sitges it runs into tunnels under the Garraf massif. There is also the old C‑31 road: it winds along the hillsides above the sea, so the drive takes longer, but the view from the window is better. You and the driver decide together which road to take.
