What awaits you in Tarragona
The Roman amphitheatre stands right by the water. Nearly two thousand years ago gladiators fought here, and today you look out at the sea from the stands. There is no other combination like it anywhere in Spain.
The whole archaeological ensemble is UNESCO-protected. Besides the amphitheatre, the circus, the forum and the city walls have survived, and outside the city stands the Ferreres aqueduct: two tiers, 217 metres long, and you can walk along the top.
A city with a life of its own. Tarragona is not a resort but an ordinary Spanish city with a university and a port. Bar prices are local rather than touristy, and in the second half of September the city spends two weeks celebrating Santa Tecla.
The Balcony of the Mediterranean. A viewpoint at the end of the Rambla, with a wrought-iron railing. Tradition has it that touching the railing brings luck: it has been rubbed to a shine.
PortAventura a quarter of an hour away. The park is closer to Tarragona than it looks on the map: about 12 kilometres.
