How much luggage really fits: Comfort or Van
Two people with two suitcases fit in a sedan, but four people with six suitcases already do not. The family of four with a folded stroller, the golf trip, the ski week, the couple packing for a long journey with bulky luggage - that is where it stops being obvious whether everything will go in the boot.
This guide gives you the numbers so you can decide before you book, not after the driver opens the boot.
The three classes at a glance
| Comfort | Van | Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical car | Saloon | Minivan | Executive saloon |
| Passengers | up to 4 | up to 7 | up to 3 |
| Large suitcases | 2-3 | up to 7 | 2-3 |
| Plus cabin bags | 2 | several | 2 |
| Oversized items | no | yes | no |
A large suitcase here means the checked size most airlines allow, roughly 75 cm tall. A cabin bag is the 55 x 40 x 20 cm piece that goes in the overhead locker.

The number most people get wrong
Choose the class by the size of the boot, not by the number of seats. A sedan seats four, and only three suitcases go in. Four adults with a case each will not travel in one car.
A saloon boot holds 540 litres. A minivan with all seven seats occupied takes over 1,000 litres, and more than three times that with the rear rows folded.
That is the real gap. Not two extra seats, but a boot with room to spare while every seat is still taken.
The price difference is smaller than people expect
This surprises most travellers. The gap between classes stays within 4-10%, and the longer the ride, the smaller it gets:
| Route | Distance | Comfort from | Van costs more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport - central Barcelona | 14 km | from €58 | about 10% |
| Airport - Sitges | 29 km | from €82 | about 8% |
| Airport - Salou | 102 km | from €198 | about 5% |
| Barcelona - Valencia | 348 km | from €592 | about 4% |
The longer the ride, the smaller the gap in percentage terms. On a short airport run the difference between classes is a few euros, and the calculator on the route page shows the exact figure for each class. That is less than a coffee each for four people, and it removes the entire question of whether the boot will close.
Our advice is simple: if you are hesitating between the two, take the Van. The cost of guessing wrong is a second vehicle. The cost of guessing right is a few euros.

When Comfort is the right fit
- Two people, two large suitcases plus a cabin bag each
- A solo business traveller with a case and a laptop bag
- Three adults travelling light, hand luggage only
- A couple with one child and one folded compact stroller
In all of these the sedan is not a compromise. It is the right car, and it costs less.
When you need the Van
Four or more passengers with a case each. The arithmetic runs out in the sedan boot, not in the seats.
A stroller. A folded stroller takes roughly the space of one medium suitcase. Two adults, a baby, two cases and a stroller is already a Van.
Skis or snowboards. A ski bag is around 175 cm long. It does not go in a sedan boot in any orientation, and putting it through the cabin means folding down seats you need for people.
Golf. A hard travel cover for clubs is about 130 x 40 x 40 cm. One fits awkwardly in a large sedan. Two do not fit at all.
Surfboards. Shortboards up to 190 cm travel fine in a Van with a rear row folded. Write to us about longboards before booking: we will check the length and tell you honestly if they will not fit.
A bike box. Standard bike travel cases are around 140 x 80 x 30 cm. Van only, and one box uses most of the boot.
Trade show materials. Roll-up banners, sample cases, printed stock. If you can measure the longest side, tell us and we will confirm.
Two things worth knowing before you book
The price is per vehicle, not per person. A Van for six is not six fares. For a group it usually works out cheaper per head than two sedans, and always cheaper than two of anything.
Child seats are free in every class and compulsory for children up to 135 cm. They do not eat into your luggage allowance, but they do occupy a seat. Two children in seats plus three adults means five seats used, which is Van territory even with modest luggage.
Decide in a minute: measure your longest item
Most awkward cases come down to one item. If you know the longest dimension of your biggest piece, the answer is usually immediate:
| Longest side | What you need |
|---|---|
| under 80 cm | fits in any class |
| 80 to 130 cm | Van, or Comfort if it is the only large item |
| over 130 cm | Van, and tell us what it is when you book |
You can write to us before paying: we will go through your list and work it out together. Sending a photo of the packed luggage is fine too, a picture tells us more than a description.
Frequently asked
Does a folded stroller count as a suitcase? Yes. In the boot a folded stroller takes up as much room as one medium suitcase. If two large suitcases travel with it, you need the Van.
How many large suitcases fit in a Comfort sedan? Two comfortably, three if they are standard checked size and nobody has a fourth. Plus two cabin bags in the cabin.
How many fit in a Van? Up to seven large cases with all seven seats occupied. Fold the rear row and the capacity roughly doubles.
Can I bring skis? Yes, in a Van. A ski bag is about 175 cm and will not fit a sedan. Mention it when booking so the driver arranges the cabin.
What about a golf travel bag? One hard cover goes into a Van, and two do as well. In a sedan one fits with difficulty, and there is no room for a second.
Is the Van much more expensive? Between 4% and 10% depending on the route: the longer the drive, the smaller the gap. On a short airport run it is a few euros for the whole car.
Is the price per person? No, per vehicle. The number of passengers does not change the fare.
What if my luggage does not fit on arrival? Write to us before booking rather than at an open boot. If we picked the class and got it wrong, we sort it out. If we hear about the surfboard in the car park, a second car has to be ordered on the spot.
Do child seats reduce luggage space? No, but each one uses a passenger seat. Count seats and cases separately.
The class selector sits in the booking form, and the price for each shows before you confirm: try it on the airport to central Barcelona route, where Comfort is from €58 and the Van a few euros more. For families heading to the coast, the airport to Salou and PortAventura run is the most common Van booking we get.
