A mountain of round stone fingers. The massif is visible from afar and looks like nothing around it: over millions of years the conglomerate has eroded into rounded towers. Hence the name: in Catalan mont serrat means "sawn mountain", from serra, a saw.
A monastery at 720 metres. The Benedictine abbey was founded in the eleventh century and is still active. Its main treasure is the Black Madonna, a twelfth-century wooden statue. There is a queue to see her, and by tradition people touch the statue's hand.
The boys' choir sings twice a day. The Escolania is one of the oldest singing schools in Europe, more than seven hundred years old. On weekdays the boys sing the Salve and the Virolai at 13:00 and after vespers at 19:15; on Sundays at the 11:00 mass. The midday singing needs a booking, and places go early. The performance is short, about fifteen minutes.
Walking trails to the peaks. Routes lead from the monastery to the hermitages of Sant Joan and Sant Jeroni, up to the highest point at 1236 metres. There are funiculars if you would rather not climb on foot.
It is colder at the top. Five to eight degrees cooler than the coast, with snow in winter. You need a jacket even on a summer evening.
