Getting to Casa Sagnier: the house of the architect who built half of Barcelona
Enric Sagnier left Barcelona more than five hundred buildings, more than any other architect of the modernista era. The Law Courts, the customs house in the port, the church on top of Tibidabo. And one house he built for himself: Rambla de Catalunya 104, 1892, his home and studio under one roof.
Today that house is the hotel Casa Sagnier.
What kind of place it is
Casa Sagnier has fifty-one rooms and the restaurant El Café de l'Arquitecte, named after the building's former owner. A terrace, a sauna, a gym.
In Barcelona, Sagnier's name stands next to Gaudi, Puig i Cadafalch and Domenech i Montaner - the four architects who gave the city the look everyone recognises. Sagnier worked more soberly than the others: fewer decorative liberties, more medieval architecture behind it.

From the El Prat terminals to the hotel is 14 km and the drive takes ~26 min. The route runs along Gran Via straight into the centre - no ring roads, but the last kilometres come with traffic lights.

The Aerobus reaches Placa Catalunya in 35 minutes, and from there it is a ten-minute walk up Rambla de Catalunya. The ticket costs 7.75 €, and there is a combined one with the metro for 10.15 €.
The metro is cheaper: 5.90 € and one change. L9 Sud to Zona Universitaria, then L3 to Diagonal station, about five minutes from the hotel. It takes longer, but you barely have to walk. The ticket is loaded onto a T-mobilitat card, and the card is personal - four of you will need four cards.
People choose a transfer here not because there is no other way. The reasons are different: a late flight when the Aerobus no longer runs, travelling with children, bulky luggage, or simply not wanting to work out ticket machines after a flight. The Law Courts, 1904 - Sagnier's first major commission, designed together with Domenech i Estapa. The facades were carved by the best Catalan sculptors of the time: the Vallmitjana brothers, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay. It is 2.4 km from here.

The Temple of the Sacred Heart on the summit of Tibidabo - the work of a lifetime. Sagnier spent thirty years on it, until his death in 1931; his son finished it in 1961. Its silhouette is visible from almost anywhere in the city, and it is 8 km from the hotel.

Rambla de Catalunya is a pedestrian avenue of plane trees and cafe terraces, running from Placa Catalunya up towards Diagonal. One block over, in parallel, is Passeig de Gracia with Casa Batllo and La Pedrera.
The Sagrada Familia is a twenty-minute walk away, or two metro stops. La Boqueria market and the Gothic Quarter are about fifteen minutes down the Rambla.
