Barcelona to Montserrat: How Long the Drive Takes and How Much Time to Set Aside
The serrated peaks of Montserrat rise above the Catalan fields about an hour's drive west of Barcelona. Up on the mountain there's a Benedictine monastery, the shrine of the Virgin of Montserrat, a museum and a web of walking trails - from a fifteen-minute stroll to a half-day climb.
This is one of the most popular day trips out of Barcelona, and it's easy to leave yourself less time than the trip actually needs.
How long the drive takes
From central Barcelona to the monastery is 60 km, a ~1 hr 4 min drive in normal traffic. From Barcelona Airport it is 56 km and ~54 min: the airport sits closer to the motorway.
Guidebooks often say "50 kilometres", but that's rounded: by road it comes to 60 km. Timing depends more on the final stretch - the switchbacks up to the monastery.
The last twenty minutes are the slowest
The final approach is a mountain road - tight bends, constant climb. It's a beautiful drive, but you can't relax behind the wheel. And in summer the car park by the monastery fills up early, so you spend the last few minutes looking for a space.
With a driver at the wheel, passengers watch the view instead of the next hairpin.
A couple or a solo traveller is fine in a Comfort. A family or group with hiking gear, a pushchair or picnic bags needs a Van: up to seven seats and room for the bags.

You can't plan your return time in advance
An hour is nowhere near enough for Montserrat. A typical visit means the basilica, the queue for the Black Madonna, the museum and, often, one of the funiculars up to the higher trails. The Escolania boys' choir sings in the basilica, and many people build their day around it; the schedule is on the monastery website.
So hourly hire works better than a fixed pickup time for the way back. You've paid for the hours, so your driver waits at the foot of the mountain, your things stay in the car, and you leave when you're ready.
What is free and what you pay for
Entry to the monastery grounds and the square in front of the basilica is free. A paid ticket covers the basilica, the Black Madonna and the museum, and the Cremallera rack railway and the funicular up the mountain are ticketed separately.

Non-residents pay to enter the Sanctuary - the atrium, the basilica and the Camarín of the Black Madonna. Entry runs in timed slots and has to be booked. Admission is free if you are attending a service, if you live in Catalonia, Spain or another EU country, or if you are staying in one of the monastery's own hotels. Organised groups pay. For one person travelling light, the train works out cheaper. A car earns its keep once there are three or more of you, or you've got luggage or a pushchair. It also helps if you'd rather not build the day around a train that runs once an hour.
