To the far end of the Maresme
Malgrat de Mar is the last town of the Maresme before Blanes and the Costa Brava. It has wide sandy beaches, a long promenade and plenty of family hotels, and its evenings are calmer than in Calella. From Barcelona airport it is 82 km, a drive of ~1 hr 7 min, a little further than Calella or Santa Susanna.
A long way by train. Malgrat is near the far end of the R1 coastal line, and the train stops at almost every village on the way. The car takes the C-32 and goes straight to your address: a hotel on the beach, an apartment in the centre or a house away from the sea.
Families and groups. The Van seats seven, and its boot takes a pushchair as well as the suitcases. Child seats are free in every class. For up to sixteen people there is the Bus.

Malgrat and its neighbours
The beach. The sand at Malgrat is wide, wide enough to fly a kite, and a long promenade runs beside it.
The centre. Above the tiled roofs rises a bell tower; in the middle of town stand the church of Sant Nicolau and an avenue of plane trees.
Blanes next door. The next town north is Blanes, where the Costa Brava begins at the Sa Palomera rock. Blanes has the Marimurtra botanical garden on a cliff above the sea and a fishing port. Lloret de Mar, a resort known for its nightlife, is a little further on.
Back towards Barcelona. Santa Susanna is the next resort south, and Calella lies a little further along the same coast; Calella is the livelier of the two.
The road and tolls. The car follows the C-32 along the coast for most of the way. Tolls are not part of the price: if the route uses a toll road, you pay the driver back for it on the spot, against the receipt.
