From Barcelona Airport to Hotel Mirlo: the Road to the Foot of Tibidabo
Mirlo sits away from the busiest, most obvious corners of Barcelona, the ones where the tourist hotels cluster. This isn't the Gothic Quarter, not the Eixample, not the crowded waterfront by the Columbus monument. Avinguda Tibidabo is a quiet street of mansions at the foot of the mountain of the same name. The Michelin guide puts it like this: guests head into the city during the day and then come back to the "nest" (the hotel's name is Spanish for "blackbird").
You gain privacy and quiet, and there's a flip side: getting here is harder than reaching the centre. Here's how people actually travel to Hotel Mirlo.
What the place is
Hotel Mirlo occupies Torre Macaya, a mansion built in 1918 for the Macaya family. In the 1980s the house became the office of the Ogilvy advertising agency. One of the copywriters there, later the creative director, was Carlos Ruiz Zafón - the future author of The Shadow of the Wind.
The house made it into the novel. The creaking wooden staircase and the building's other oddities went to the mansion of the Aldaya family - the very one the plot turns around. Ever since, readers have come to Avinguda Tibidabo 32 as a place of pilgrimage: in Spain, only Don Quixote has outsold The Shadow of the Wind.
The hotel opened here in 2021, and the owners kept the traces of that history. Room 401 was Zafón's office, and you can book it.
Nobody turned the building into a museum or into faceless apartments. The original details are left in plain sight: a moulded ceiling, a massive wooden beam mounted on the wall as an art object. Beside them you get a modern spa area in every room: a hammam with a rainfall shower and a jacuzzi with chromotherapy, plus a private sauna in some rooms.
Sixteen rooms, a garden and the El Nido del Mirlo restaurant, "the blackbird's nest". The hotel holds a Michelin Key, the mark the guide gives to places it particularly singles out.

How long the ride from the airport takes
From the El Prat terminals to the hotel is 20 km, a ride of ~30 min. That's closer than it looks on the map. The route follows the B-23 bypass and the Ronda de Dalt ring road, skirting the centre with its jams and its endless traffic lights.

Why public transport is awkward here
The Aerobús drops you at Plaça de Catalunya, which is the centre. From there you need the FGC, the Catalan commuter railway: the L7 runs to its last stop, Avinguda Tibidabo, about twelve minutes. From the station up to the hotel you walk, and Avinguda Tibidabo climbs the whole way. That's a poor start to a holiday if you've got bulky luggage and a flight's worth of tiredness behind you.
The metro is more of a puzzle than the bus. The L9 Sud doesn't reach the centre directly: first Zona Universitària, then a change to the L3 as far as Diagonal, and from there the FGC L7. Three lines, two changes with suitcases. On top of that, the €5.90 airport ticket is no good on the FGC, which belongs to another operator, so you buy a separate one for €2.90. The ticket itself goes onto a T-mobilitat card and is single-person: four of you will need four cards.
A metered taxi by day can work out cheaper than a transfer. The difference lies elsewhere: with a meter you learn the total at the end of the ride. A transfer price is fixed when you book, and it grows neither with traffic nor with a night tariff.
Fly in during the day and travel light, and public transport is a sensible choice. With luggage, with children or on a late flight, you gain more in convenience than you pay in price. What is near the hotel
Avinguda Tibidabo is where the climb up the mountain begins. A bus runs from the last FGC stop to the funicular. At the top you find the Tibidabo amusement park, the Temple of the Sacred Heart and the Fabra Observatory. From up there the whole panorama of Barcelona opens out.
The street itself is built up with modernista mansions, and Torre Macaya is one of them. A few minutes away on foot is CosmoCaixa, a science museum in a modernista building from the start of the twentieth century. Travelling with children? You can lose half a day in there: a Foucault pendulum, a flooded Amazon forest and live leafcutter ants.
The centre is about twenty minutes away by car, or the same by FGC, the commuter train: seven stops from Avinguda Tibidabo station to Plaça de Catalunya.
