From Barcelona airport to Hotel Mirlo: the road to the foot of Tibidabo
Mirlo sits outside the busiest and most obvious parts of Barcelona, where most visitors look for a hotel. This is not the Gothic Quarter, not the Eixample and not the crowded waterfront by the Columbus monument. Avinguda Tibidabo is a quiet street of mansions at the foot of the hill of the same name. The Michelin Guide puts it like this: guests head into the city by day and then come back to the nest (the hotel's name is Spanish for blackbird).
Alongside the privacy and seclusion, that location has a flip side: getting here is harder than getting to the centre. Let's look at the ways to reach Hotel Mirlo.
The place itself
Hotel Mirlo occupies Torre Macaya, a mansion built in 1918 for the Macaya family. In the 1980s the house became the office of the advertising agency Ogilvy, where one of the copywriters, later creative director, was Carlos Ruiz Zafon - the future author of The Shadow of the Wind.
The house made it into the novel. The acoustics of the wooden staircase and other oddities of the building became the Aldaya family mansion, the one the whole plot turns around. Since then Avinguda Tibidabo 32 has been a place readers come to: in Spain, The Shadow of the Wind is outsold only by Don Quixote.
The hotel opened here in 2021, and the owners kept the traces of that history. Room 401 was Zafon's office and you can book it.
The building was turned neither into a museum nor into anonymous apartments. Original 1920s details are left in plain sight: a moulded ceiling, a massive wooden beam mounted on the wall like a piece of art. Next to them sits a modern spa area in every room: a hammam with a waterfall shower and a jacuzzi with chromotherapy, and a private sauna in some of them.
Sixteen rooms, a garden and the restaurant El Nido del Mirlo - the blackbird's nest. The hotel holds a Michelin Key, the guide's mark for places it singles out.

How long the ride from the airport takes
From the El Prat terminals to the hotel is 15 km, and the drive takes about 17 minutes. That is closer than the map suggests: the route runs along the B-23 bypass and the Ronda de Dalt ring road, avoiding the centre with its traffic and constant lights.

Why public transport is awkward here
The Aerobus takes you to Placa Catalunya, which is the centre. From there you need the FGC L7 suburban line: it runs to the Avinguda Tibidabo terminus, about twelve minutes. From the station to the hotel you then walk uphill - Avinguda Tibidabo climbs the slope. Not the nicest start to a holiday if you have bulky luggage and the tiredness of a flight behind you.
The metro is harder still. Line L9 Sud does not reach the centre directly: first to Zona Universitaria, change to L3 to Diagonal, then back onto the FGC. Three lines, two changes with suitcases. On top of that, the 5.90 € ticket is loaded onto a T-mobilitat card, and the card is personal - four of you will need four cards.
By day a taxi on the meter can work out cheaper than a transfer. The difference lies elsewhere: with a meter you learn the sum at the end of the ride, while the transfer price is fixed at booking and does not grow with traffic or night rates.
If you fly in during the day and travel light, public transport is a sensible choice. With luggage, with children or on a late flight, the difference in comfort outweighs the difference in price. The transfer from the airport to central Barcelona takes ~26 min and costs from €58 - the drive to Avinguda Tibidabo is slightly shorter.
What is around the hotel
Avinguda Tibidabo is where the climb up the hill begins. A bus runs from the FGC terminus to the funicular, and at the top are the Tibidabo amusement park, the Temple of the Sacred Heart and the Fabra Observatory. The panorama from up there is considered the best in Barcelona.
The street itself is lined with modernista mansions, and Torre Macaya is one of them. A few minutes away is CosmoCaixa, a science museum in an early twentieth-century building. If you are travelling with children, you can easily lose half a day there: Foucault's pendulum, the flooded Amazon forest and live leafcutter ants.
The centre of the city is about twenty minutes away by car, or the same by FGC, the suburban train: seven stops from Avinguda Tibidabo to Placa Catalunya.
What to know about the transfer
