What awaits you in Benidorm

The skyline here is by design, not by accident. By population Benidorm is a small town, yet it looks like a metropolis, and that was planned: the 1956 general plan and the 1963 building rules required tall towers to stand apart, surrounded by open space, so the buildings went up rather than out. As a result, Benidorm ranks third in Europe for its concentration of high-rises, after London and Milan. It is also home to the Gran Hotel Bali: 186 metres, the tallest hotel in Spain. Whatever you make of it, there is nothing else like it anywhere on the coast.

Two beaches with different characters. Levante has the bars and the nightlife; Poniente is longer, quieter and older in spirit, and more of the people on it are holidaymakers from Spain itself. Between them is the rocky headland with the old town and the Balcony of the Mediterranean, a small viewpoint on the ruins of the fortress, and below it hides the tiny Mal Pas beach.

There is more nature here than the postcards admit. The Serra Gelada natural park runs east from Levante along cliffs that drop straight into the sea, with a path along the top and a lighthouse at the end. Opposite Mal Pas beach lies Benidorm Island with its marine reserve, and from spring to autumn the Terra Mítica and Terra Natura parks inland give families a plan for the day the beach is off.
