What awaits you in Benidorm
The skyline here is by design, not by accident. Benidorm is a small town by population but looks like a metropolis, and that was planned: the 1956 development plan required every tower to have its own open land, so the buildings went up rather than out. The result is the densest cluster of high-rises in Spain outside Madrid, including the Gran Hotel Bali: 186 metres, 52 floors, still the tallest hotel in Europe. Whatever you make of it, there is nothing else like it on the coast.
Two beaches with different characters. Levante faces the morning sun and holds the bars, the nightlife and most of the British; Poniente is longer, quieter and older in spirit, and the locals lean towards it. Between them is the rocky headland with the old town and the Balcony of the Mediterranean, a small viewpoint in blue-and-white tiles on the ruins of the fortress - and beneath it hides the tiny Mal Pas beach.
There is more nature here than the postcards admit. The Serra Gelada natural park runs east from Levante along cliffs that drop straight into the sea, with a path along the top and a lighthouse at the end. Boats leave the bay for the uninhabited Benidorm Island, and the Terra Mítica and Terra Natura parks inland give families a plan for the day the beach is off.
