What awaits you in Elche
The Palmeral, the largest palm grove in Europe. That is what the Elche tourist office calls it: the grove has more than 200,000 palm trees. The Palmeral has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. The Ruta del Palmeral walking route starts at the Palm Museum, where a ticket costs €1, and entry is free on Sundays.
The Huerto del Cura garden and the Imperial Palm. Elche's most famous palm tree grows in the Huerto del Cura garden. It has eight trunks and is around 180-190 years old. The palm is named after Empress Sisi, who visited the garden in 1894. The garden opens at 10:00, and an adult ticket with an audio guide costs €6.80. On winter Sundays the garden closes as early as 15:00, so come in the morning.
The view from the bell tower of the Basilica of Santa María. The climb to the top of the bell tower is 170 steps, and a ticket costs €2. From the top you will see the palms surrounding the old town. From 1 November the bell tower is open until 15:00.
The Mystery Play and a night of fireworks in August. On 14 and 15 August the Mystery Play of Elche, a medieval musical drama on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, is performed in the Basilica of Santa María. At midnight on 13 August, during the Nit de l'Albà, the Palm of the Virgin goes up over the city: a firework in the shape of a palm tree. For these dates, book your accommodation and transfer early.
Where to learn the story of the Lady of Elche. The original of the famous stone sculpture has been kept in Madrid since 1971. In Elche the story of the find is told at the MAHE Archaeological Museum and at La Alcudia park, where the Lady was found. The park is open only from 9:30 to 14:30 and is closed on Mondays. Allow about two hours for your visit.
Beaches and rice with a crust. Elche has 9 km of sandy coast and six beaches. The best-known local dish is arroz con costra, rice baked under a crust of egg. And before you leave Elche, buy some dates from the palm grove to take home.
