What awaits you in Santa Pola
Flamingos in the Santa Pola salt pans. Next to the town lies the Salinas de Santa Pola natural park: 2,470 hectares of lagoons and salt pans. Up to 8,000 flamingos can be seen here, and according to the tourist office the birds live in the salt pans all year round. Entry to the Salt Museum and the park's information centre is free, and both are open daily from 9:00 to 14:00.
The fishing port and the fish auction. The tourist office calls Santa Pola one of the most important fishing ports on the Spanish Mediterranean. The fish auction takes place on weekdays from 16:00 to 19:00, and you can buy fresh fish at the fishermen's guild shop.
The fortress and its Sea Museum. The 16th-century fortress stands right in the town centre, and the Sea Museum is inside. Entry is free. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00, and on Sundays from 11:00 to 13:30. The aquarium next door is closed in October and November 2026.
Tabarca, Spain's first marine reserve. Boats to the island of Tabarca leave the harbour all year round: every half hour in season and four times a day in winter. Since 1986 the waters around the island have been protected as the country's first marine reserve.
The lighthouse on Cape Santa Pola. A lighthouse built in 1858 stands on the cape, and from it you can see Tabarca and the Peñón de Ifach. According to the tourist office, the cape itself is made of a fossil coral reef that is unique in Europe.
Gran Playa and help getting into the water. Gran Playa stretches for 1,425 metres. From June to the second week of September, staff on two adapted sections of the beach help people into the water, but you need to book in advance. Santa Pola also has a beach for dogs.
