What you'll find at Montserrat
The monastery sits at seven hundred metres on a mountain of eroded conglomerate pillars, and those rounded shapes are what gave it the name: montserrat means serrated mountain.
Inside the basilica is La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, patron saint of Catalonia. The queue to walk past her is longest between noon and three. The boys' choir, the Escolania, is one of the oldest in Europe and sings most days at one in the afternoon.
Above the monastery two funiculars climb further: Sant Joan towards the ridge paths, and Santa Cova down to the chapel built where the statue was found. Both are short walks that turn a visit into half a day.
Getting from Sants to Montserrat: the options
There is no direct train to the monastery. Every public route involves at least two changes and a mountain leg.
By train and rack railway. From Placa Espanya, not from Sants, take the R5 towards Manresa and change at Monistrol de Montserrat for the cremallera, the rack railway. Around two hours each way including the walk to Placa Espanya and the wait for the connection.
By train and cable car. The same R5 line, but off at Aeri de Montserrat for the cable car. Faster on paper, though the cabin closes in high wind and the queue at midday can be long.
By tour bus. Departures are early and fixed, and the coach leaves the mountain when the schedule says so, not when you are done.
By private transfer. One hour, door to the monastery gates, and the departure time is yours. If your train into Sants is late we follow it and move the pickup.
Timing your visit
Arrive before ten if you want the basilica quiet. The first trains and the tour coaches deliver most of the day's visitors between eleven and two.
The choir sings at one. Most people plan around that, which is exactly why the hour before it is the busiest of the day.
Allow for the weather. At seven hundred metres it is several degrees cooler than in the city, and cloud can sit on the mountain when Barcelona is clear. In winter bring a layer more than you think you need.
The driver can wait. Waiting beyond the free period is charged by time and agreed before the trip, so a three hour visit with a return leg is a normal booking rather than an exception.
