From Sants station it is 58 km, and the drive takes ~1 hr 3 min. There is no direct train from Sants to the mountain. The rack railway starts in Monistrol de Montserrat, and to get there you first have to reach Plaça d'Espanya, change lines, and then switch to the rack railway or the cable car.
That is three changes with luggage and a timetable that is not yours. By car it is 58 km on the C-55, a little over an hour, and you choose the departure time. The driver collects you at the door and drives straight to the address.

What awaits you at Montserrat
The Benedictine monastery is cut into the rock face at seven hundred metres. The basilica holds La Moreneta, the Romanesque statue of the Black Madonna, patron saint of Catalonia since the nineteenth century.
The Escolania choir sings at one o'clock on weekdays and at 11:00 on Sundays. It is one of the oldest choir schools in Europe, with documents going back to the thirteenth century. The singing lasts about fifteen minutes, and the basilica fills up well beforehand.
Trails are marked out around the monastery. Two funiculars take you up to Sant Joan, with views over the valley, and down to Santa Cova, the cave where legend says the statue was found.
When to go
Early in the morning. The tour coaches arrive by eleven. Before that, the square in front of the monastery is calm.
For the Escolania at one o'clock, it is worth being inside half an hour ahead. In July the choir is on holiday.
It is colder up top than in Barcelona, by five to eight degrees, and the wind blows. A jacket that is unnecessary in the city will come in handy up there.
The monastery closes in the afternoon. If you want to take the funicular and walk, allow at least three hours at the top.
