What awaits you in Toledo
Three cultures on one rock. Toledo stands in a loop of the Tagus, on a granite outcrop that forced the city to grow upwards and inwards. The Gothic cathedral took more than two centuries to build; from the Jewish quarter survive the synagogues of El Tránsito and Santa María la Blanca - in the second, horseshoe arches rest on white octagonal pillars; and the small mosque of Cristo de la Luz, built in 999, is the oldest surviving building in the city.
El Greco lived here for almost forty years. His Burial of the Count of Orgaz hangs in the church of Santo Tomé, in the very chapel it was painted for rather than a museum hall, and next door the El Greco museum recreates a house and studio of his time. Above it all stands the square Alcázar, rebuilt after the civil war; today it houses the Army Museum and the regional library, with a reading room looking out over the river.
Better to arrive towards evening than at coach hour. From eleven to five the lanes are packed with groups from Madrid; then the city empties, and the walk down to the San Martín bridge or up to the Mirador del Valle, from where all of Toledo stands opposite you across the gorge, is a different place altogether. The climb from the lower car parks is steep, but the public escalators at Safont and Recaredo take most of it off you.
