The most complete city wall in Europe. The walls of Ávila circle the old town for 2,516 metres, with 88 semicircular towers and nine gates, about twelve metres high and three thick; building began at the end of the eleventh century, and in 1985 they were added to the UNESCO list. Long stretches are open to walk along the top, and only from there does the layout make sense: a grid of granite streets locked inside a ring, and the Castilian plain all around.
The cathedral is part of the wall. Its apse was built as one of the defensive towers, so from outside the church reads as a fortification rather than a temple. Just beyond the San Vicente gate stands the Romanesque basilica of San Vicente, and the convent of Santa Teresa occupies the site of the house where she was born in 1515 - her books are the reason this small city carries the weight it does.

At over 1,130 metres Ávila is the highest provincial capital in Spain, and you can see it in the food: chuletón of mountain beef, thick beans from El Barco, and the egg-yolk sweets, yemas de Santa Teresa, from the convent shops. Across the river Adaja, at Los Cuatro Postes, four Doric columns on the hillside give you that panorama of the whole wall in a single frame - best an hour before sunset, when the granite turns the colour of honey.
