A station with a garden. The old hall of Atocha, from 1892 - cast-iron columns, a glass roof and a real tropical garden with palms and turtles. Even with suitcases it is worth stepping in for ten minutes: it is one of the most unusual stations in Europe.
Trains in every direction. From Atocha the AVE leaves for Seville, Málaga, Valencia, Alicante and Barcelona, plus Cercanías local trains around Madrid and the suburbs. The boards and signage are duplicated in English; the AVE halls are beyond a luggage check, so allow time.
The museum mile is next door. The Prado, the Thyssen and the Reina Sofía stand ten minutes on foot from the station, and the Retiro park is right behind the Prado. If you have three hours between trains, that is exactly how to spend them.
