Madrid's Barajas is a rare case of a capital's airport standing almost in the city. But traffic here is a fact of life, so our price is fixed when you book and does not depend on time on the road. Hotels on Gran Vía, in Salamanca or La Latina - the driver takes you to the door, and the restrictions on driving into the centre do not apply to him.

Everything in Spain is measured from here. The plaque in front of the Casa de Correos on Puerta del Sol is kilometre zero, the point from which the country's radial roads are counted, and a few steps away stands the bronze bear at the strawberry tree. Around it is a compact, walkable old town: the arcaded Plaza Mayor, next to it the San Miguel market in its cast-iron frame of 1916, and the Royal Palace ten minutes to the west.
All the art on a single square kilometre. The Prado, the Reina Sofía with Guernica and the Thyssen-Bornemisza stand so close that you could walk all three in a day, though two museums is usually enough. All three are on the Paseo del Prado boulevard, which together with the Retiro park was added to the UNESCO list in 2021 as the "Landscape of Light". In the Retiro head for the boating lake, the glass Crystal Palace and the rose garden.
It is not a seaside city, and it does not pretend to be. Madrid stands inland at 650 metres: summer days are dry and hot, winter nights cold, and dinner rarely starts before nine. Sunday morning belongs to El Rastro, the flea market in the streets of La Latina, and at sunset the city heads for the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian sanctuary reassembled above the Parque del Oeste.
From the airport to the centre is 26 km, ~30 min. The streets in the centre are narrow, one-way and inside the restricted-access zone, so a drop-off right at the door helps a lot with luggage.
