Chamartín station is 14 km from Barajas airport: of Madrid's two main stations, it is the closer one to the airport. Booked a transfer from El Prat Airport to our hotel in the Gothic Quarter and it was flawless. What awaits you at Chamartín station
Madrid's northern railway gateway. Chamartín-Clara Campoamor, the second of the city's two big stations, opened in 1967 in the north of Madrid, and in 2020 it was named after the lawyer who won Spanish women the right to vote. Lines to the north and north-west leave from here: high-speed trains to Valladolid, Burgos, León, Asturias and Galicia, Alvia trains to Cantabria and the Basque Country, with Cercanías commuter trains and metro lines 1 and 10 alongside.
Not to be confused with Atocha. The two stations stand at opposite ends of the city, about seven kilometres apart as the crow flies, and their routes overlap: AVE trains to Valencia and Alicante also leave from Chamartín. The station you need is on your ticket, and if you get it wrong, the commuter rail tunnel links the two in about fifteen minutes: exactly the fifteen minutes you usually do not have before departure.
Business Madrid all around. A few hundred metres to the south is Plaza de Castilla with the leaning Puerta de Europa towers, and further down the Castellana is the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. To the north-west, also on the Castellana, stand the glass skyscrapers of Cuatro Torres, which you can see straight from the platforms. There is not much sightseeing here, but there are plenty of hotels for anyone with an early train, and Puerta del Sol in the historic centre is eight minutes away on the Cercanías commuter train, or on metro line one with no changes.
From the airport it is 14 km and ~15 min: Chamartín is closer to the airport than Atocha and the centre, which matters when the plane is coming in and the train ticket is already bought.
