What awaits you at Chamartín station
Madrid's northern railway gateway. Chamartín-Clara Campoamor is the second of the city's two big stations, built in the 1970s on the northern edge and named after the lawyer who won Spanish women the vote. Lines to the north and north-west leave from here: high-speed trains to Valladolid, Burgos, León, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country, alongside Cercanías suburban trains and metro lines 1 and 10.
Not to be confused with Atocha. The stations stand at opposite ends of the city, ten kilometres apart, and serve different directions: Atocha the south and the Mediterranean, Chamartín the north. The right one is on your ticket, and if you get it wrong, the suburban tunnel links them in about fifteen minutes - precisely the fifteen minutes you usually do not have before departure.
Business Madrid all around. A few hundred metres south is Plaza de Castilla with the leaning Puerta de Europa towers, beyond them the four glass skyscrapers of the Cuatro Torres, and further down the Castellana the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. There is not much to see here, but plenty of hotels for those with an early train, and the historic centre is twenty minutes away on metro line 1.
