Girona is the closest airport to this stretch of coast, and the drive is about forty nine kilometres. The problem is the airport itself: it serves seasonal and charter traffic, and the bus timetable is built around a handful of flights rather than around the day.
If your flight lands outside those windows, the public option is a bus into Girona city and a second one out to the coast, which turns forty minutes of driving into most of an afternoon.

What Platja d'Aro is like
It is the busiest resort on this part of the coast, and it makes no secret of it. A two kilometre sandy beach, a main street of shops that stays open late, and more restaurants per block than anywhere nearby.
That suits some travellers and not others. If you want quiet, the coves either side are the answer: Cala Rovira, Sa Cova and the small bays towards Sant Antoni are a few minutes away and empty by comparison.
The cami de ronda coastal path runs from the end of the beach towards S'Agaro, past the modernist villas of the Sa Conca headland. Half an hour of walking gets you somewhere that looks nothing like the main street.
Getting there: the options
By airport bus. Services are timed to specific flights and go to Girona city or Barcelona, not along the coast.
By bus, changing in Girona. Into the city, then a coastal service. Around an hour and a half in total when the connection works, longer when it does not.
By hire car. Reasonable for the drive, though parking near the beach in August is its own project.
By private transfer. Forty minutes from the terminal to your apartment, with the driver waiting if the flight is late.
Arriving at a seasonal airport
Flights here bunch. Two or three land together and the arrivals hall fills, then it is empty for hours. Our driver waits in the hall with your name rather than in a queue outside.
The free hour starts when you land, not when you booked. Give the flight number and we track it, so a delay does not cost you the transfer.
Give the exact address. Platja d'Aro runs for two kilometres along the front and the apartment blocks look alike. A street and number saves ten minutes of driving in circles.
In August the last kilometre is the slow one. The seafront is pedestrian in the evenings and the approach roads back up. Allow for it on the return leg.
