Begur is on a hill with a ruined castle at the top, and the sea is four kilometres away down several different roads. The town has the shops and the restaurants; the coves have the water.
The houses in the streets below the castle are cases d'indians, built by villagers who emigrated to Cuba in the nineteenth century and returned with money. Colonial verandas and palms in a Catalan hill town make sense once you know the history.
Sa Riera is the largest cove and the simplest to reach. Aiguablava and Fornells sit in a sheltered bay of pale sand and clear water. Sa Tuna and Aiguafreda are small, pebbly and quiet. The cami de ronda path links them along the cliffs.
Getting there: the options
By airport bus. Services run to Girona city and Barcelona, timed to specific flights, not along the coast.
By bus with a change. Into Girona, then a coastal service to the town square. Two hours or more depending on the connection.
By hire car. Practical for the drive, less so at the coves: the approach lanes are narrow and the parking fills early in August.
By private transfer. A little over an hour, door to the address, including down at the water.
