What awaits you in Sitges
Beaches. Sitges has seventeen beaches, and it pays to pick one to suit your mood. If you want coffee and ice cream within easy reach, head for the central ones, Sant Sebastià or Ribera. They are right on the promenade, and they are as busy as you would expect. The further you go from the centre, the quieter it gets. The water is easy to get into almost everywhere, so with children you can safely choose any of them.
The old town. Old Sitges is small, and here a car only gets in the way. From the promenade it is a few minutes on foot to the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, which stands on a headland right above the sea. You have almost certainly seen its white facade on postcards. Next to it are two museums. Cau Ferrat was once the home and studio of the artist Santiago Rusiñol, and the neighbouring Maricel holds art from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.
Carnival and the film festival. If you are going to Sitges in February, March or October, check the calendar first. Before Lent the town holds its carnival, one of the best known in Spain, officially recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest. In October the town fills up with fans of horror and fantasy films as the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia gets under way. In those weeks accommodation prices go up and free rooms are snapped up fast. Book as soon as you have settled on your dates.
The road from Barcelona. Two roads lead to Sitges. The faster one, the C‑32, runs through tunnels under the Garraf massif for most of the way, so there is not much to look at. The old C‑31 winds along the hillsides right above the sea. It takes noticeably longer, but the view from the window more than makes up for the lost minutes. If you are in a hurry, choose the C‑32. If not, take the old road at least once.
