Ski Transfer from Barcelona to Andorra: Grandvalira Without the Connections
Grandvalira is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees: 215 kilometres of pistes across seven linked ski areas. It's three hours from Barcelona, which makes it a natural weekend trip. Here's where to stay, how to get there with your gear, and what to know about the winter road and the border.
Where to stay: three villages to choose from
There used to be two separate resorts here: Pas de la Casa with Grau Roig, and Soldeu with El Tarter. They were merged, then Canillo and Encamp joined them, and today a single pass covers the whole area.
Three villages make a comfortable base.
Pas de la Casa sits right on the French border, and of the three it's the closest to Barcelona. This is the noisy one: bars, duty-free shops, inexpensive hotels. Groups come here for two or three days.
Soldeu lies fifteen to twenty minutes further on, and it's quieter and pricier. Wide, gentle pistes and a ski school with a strong reputation make it the usual choice for families with children.
El Tarter sits between the two: prices are lower than in Soldeu, and the difficult pistes are the closest from here.
From Barcelona to Pas de la Casa is 191 km, or ~2 hr 42 min on the road. To reach Soldeu and El Tarter you go through the Andorran capital, which makes it 214 km.

There's no train to Andorra. The nearest station is in Spain, and from there you take a bus anyway.
The Directbus coach leaves from Barcelona Airport and Sants station, sixteen departures a day. It drops you in Andorra la Vella, the country's capital. From there it's another half hour to Pas de la Casa, and you cover that last stretch by local bus or taxi, with your skis in your hands.
The winter road
From Spain you enter Andorra through La Seu d'Urgell, and the road to the capital runs along a valley with no steep climbs. The mountains begin past Andorra la Vella: the road up to Soldeu and Pas de la Casa gains height, and in winter it ices over.
Driving your own car or a rental? Put chains in the boot. When it snows, the police stop cars before the climb and let nobody through without chains or winter tyres.
The second thing to keep in mind is Saturday traffic. On Saturday morning Barcelona residents head for the mountains in force, and on Sunday evening everyone drives back. On the C-16 that adds an hour to the journey. Leave before seven in the morning, or on Friday evening, and you'll miss the queues.
If you're flying in, the drive from the airport follows the same road and takes about half an hour longer.
The border and your documents
Andorra belongs to neither the European Union nor the Schengen area. It's a separate country with its own customs service.
The check on the way in takes a minute: you show a passport or a European ID card through the car window. Without a document you won't be let through.
On the way out, customs look more closely. People carry duty-free purchases out of Andorra, and there are limits on them. Before you travel, check the Spanish customs website for what you may take out and how much.

What if the pass closes because of snow?
Your driver keeps an eye on road conditions. Between Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa there is the Envalira toll tunnel, which runs under the pass and stays open in any weather. There is no need to cancel your trip because of snow.
Can you book the return journey in advance?
Yes, and it's best to do it when you book the first leg: Sunday-evening slots book up fast. If you want to stop in Andorra la Vella to shop, hourly hire is easier: your driver waits outside the shop and your things stay in the car.
What if my flight is delayed?
Your driver goes by the actual arrival time. The first hour of waiting at the airport is free.
