Barcelona Airport to Grandvalira

Grandvalira is six linked sectors sharing one lift pass: Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig at the French end, Soldeu and El Tarter in the middle, Canillo and Encamp lower down. Between them they cover around two hundred kilometres of piste, which is why people fly in for a week rather than a weekend.

The sectors differ in character. Pas de la Casa is high, treeless and reliable for snow. Soldeu and El Tarter have the ski school and the gentler runs, so families tend to stay there. Encamp is the lowest of the six, with a gondola up to the slopes rather than skiing from the door.

Tell us the sector and the hotel when you book. The drive between the far ends of the area is over half an hour.

By coach. Scheduled services run from Barcelona to Andorra la Vella, but not from the terminals, and from the capital you still need a local bus up to your sector with ski bags.

By hire car. Possible, with two caveats worth knowing before you book: winter equipment is required on the mountain roads in the cold months, and the Port d'Envalira pass at two thousand four hundred metres closes in heavy snow.

By private transfer. One vehicle, room for ski bags, and a driver who knows which approach is open. If the pass is shut the route goes round rather than turning back.

Say how much equipment you have. Skis and boards need a vehicle with the space for them, and six people with six ski bags is a different car from six people with cabin luggage.

There is a border. Andorra is not in the European Union, so bring the documents you flew with. Queues at the crossing are short most of the time and long on the Saturday of a holiday week.

Winter conditions are normal here. Our drivers use vehicles equipped for the mountain roads in season. What changes is the time: allow longer on a snowing Saturday than the map suggests.

Book the return with the flight time. From the upper sectors we set off earlier than most people expect, because the descent is slower than the climb when the road is wet.
