How to Get to Andorra: Which Airport Is Closest
Andorra: a country with ski resorts, low-tax shops on every corner and precisely zero airports. There is simply nowhere for a plane to land: the whole country sits in the Pyrenees. So the question of "where do I fly to?" gets answered outside its borders, and the answer is less obvious than you might think.
The closest airport is in Spain, 27 km from the Andorran capital. But it has very few flights, so almost everyone flies into Barcelona or Toulouse. Which one suits you depends on where you are flying from and why you are going: to Andorra la Vella for the shopping or to Soldeu for the skiing.

The closest of all: La Seu d'Urgell
La Seu d'Urgell airport (officially Andorra-La Seu d'Urgell) is in Spain, a few kilometres from the Andorran border. From here it is about 27 km to Andorra la Vella, half an hour by car. La Seu looks like the perfect option. But it has a weak spot: the timetable. Put simply, you can count the flights on one hand, and not everyone manages to plan a holiday around them.
Until the end of 2026 Air Nostrum flies from here to Madrid and Palma. From 1 January 2027 the French airline Chalair takes over the flights: Madrid, Palma and Paris-Orly all year round, several times a week, plus seasonal flights to Nice, Nantes and Lyon. One plane, and a small one. The Andorran government runs a free shuttle from the airport to the Andorra la Vella bus station; seats have to be booked in advance.

An airport in the mountains: oh, how romantic that sounds! The plane comes in to land over the Segre valley, with Pyrenean peaks all around. You could hardly dream up a better start to a holiday. Sadly, in the mountains the weather has the final say. In spring 2026 several flights from Madrid were diverted by wind and bad weather to Lleida, about 163 km from Andorra. That is almost the same as landing in Barcelona! Except that Barcelona was at least your own choice; here you are simply presented with a fait accompli.
Barcelona is further, but everyone flies there
From Barcelona airport to Andorra it is about 200 km, roughly three hours by car. On the plus side, there are flights from hundreds of cities, and you can almost always find a ticket for a day that suits you.
Two bus companies run straight from the airport. Andbus leaves T1 every two hours and T2 15 minutes later, takes about 3 hours 15 minutes and costs €33. Andorra DirectBus runs 7 times a day, takes 3 h 30 min to 3 h 45 min, and a ticket is €35. Both buses drop you at the Andorra la Vella bus station. If your hotel is in Soldeu or Pas de la Casa, there is one more change ahead, and by then your skis start to feel very heavy indeed.
By car, the shortest road is the C-16 through the Cadí tunnel. In 2026 the toll is €14.56. In the ski season there can be traffic jams on this road at weekends, so "three hours" sometimes turns into four. We cover what to see on the way from Barcelona in our article on the transfer from Barcelona to Andorra.
Toulouse, for those flying via France
From Toulouse airport to Andorra is roughly the same distance as from Barcelona, about 195 km. Andbus runs from here 4 times a day, the journey takes about 3.5 hours and a ticket is €36.
There is a romantic option too: the train from Toulouse to L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre station, then the Hife bus, which runs twice a day and is timed to meet the trains. Scenic, slow and with a change. By car from the French side, the road goes over the Envalira pass at 2,409 m or through the tunnel beneath it; in 2026 the tunnel toll is €8.10.
Lleida, Perpignan, Girona and Reus
On the map, Lleida and Perpignan are closer than Barcelona, about 163 km. But they have few flights, and we found no direct buses to Andorra from either airport. Girona and Reus are low-cost airports at the same distance as Barcelona. If a ticket there is noticeably cheaper, they are a good option, but you will need a car to get on to Andorra.
Andorra is not in the EU
Andorra belongs to neither the EU nor the Schengen area. EU citizens need only a passport or ID card. If you enter on a Schengen visa, it must be valid for at least two entries: crossing into Andorra counts as leaving Schengen.
Now, about the shops. On the way back into Spain, customs allowances apply: for example, 1.5 litres of spirits, 5 litres of wine, 300 cigarettes and goods worth up to €900 per person. So it is best to pack your suitcase with customs in mind from the start.
The road in winter
"Winter is coming", they warned in "Game of Thrones". In Andorra you can take those words literally: from 1 November to 15 May winter tyres or chains are compulsory. The hairpins on these roads are fairly steep, but the drivers take them calmly, with no special effects. The snow is real too, no CGI involved. The drivers know this road well, so all you have to do is look out of the window at the mountains. In winter the cars run on winter tyres, and there are always chains in the boot. Like the Starks, we get ready for winter well in advance. If you are going skiing, choose a Van or a Bus when you book: a ski bag will not fit in a sedan.
The 2026-2027 season at Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís is scheduled to open on 4 December and run until 4 April. For where else to ski near Barcelona and how to get there, see our article on ski resorts.
Transfer from Barcelona Airport to Andorra
The bus takes you as far as the bus station. After that, it is you, your suitcase and your skis versus Andorra. A transfer takes you to the door of your hotel in any Andorran parish, with no changes. After a flight and three hours in the mountains, that counts for a lot.
A transfer from Barcelona Airport to Andorra costs from €255 per car, from central Barcelona from €253. If you are heading straight for the slopes, there are separate routes to Grandvalira and to Soldeu. Trip conditions and prices by class are on the route page.
