Ski Resorts Near Barcelona: Road, Train and Season
In the morning you are strolling round Barcelona in a light jacket; two hours later you are standing on a slope at 2,500 metres. That is Catalonia for you: the Pyrenees start very close to the city. There are about a dozen resorts here, from tiny ones to the biggest in Spain.
The resorts themselves could hardly be more different, though. Some have a train, others you can only reach by car, and one you can get to by nothing but a rack railway. We have put it all in one table: how long it takes, whether there is a train and when the season starts.

Ski resorts near Barcelona in one table

| Vall de Núria | about 120 km to Ribes de Freser, 1 h 45 min | R3 train and rack railway, no other way in | dates announced in November |

Distances are rounded: some are measured from central Barcelona, some from the airport. The calculator on the route page shows the exact journey time. Catalan resorts usually announce their season dates in November.

Closest, and with a train: La Molina and Masella
The easiest weekend option. Two neighbouring resorts in the Cerdanya, about two hours from Barcelona, with a shared Alp 2500 ski pass and 145 km of pistes. La Molina is also the oldest ski resort in Spain: its first lift opened in 1943.
The R3 train runs to La Molina, and a resort bus takes you from the station to the lifts, free with a Skitren ticket or a season pass. There was even a combined Skitren ticket: train, bus, ski pass and insurance for €53. But this winter major works are under way on the R3 line: part of the route between Barcelona and La Garriga is closed, and no end date for the works has been announced yet. Buses replace the trains on that stretch, so the journey will take longer than usual.
By car, the fastest route is the C-16 through the Cadí tunnel; in 2026 the toll is €14.56. The free road goes over the Toses pass: beautiful, but in snowfall you can only get through with chains, or it is closed altogether.
Vall de Núria, where no road goes
You cannot drive into the Núria valley. At all. The only way in is the rack railway from Ribes de Freser, about 40 minutes up the gorge. You leave the car below, in Ribes or Queralbs, and carry on by a train that clambers up the gorge like a mountain goat.
The resort is small, 7.6 km of pistes, and that is its strength. Children do not get lost here, and the gentle slopes won't frighten anyone putting on skis for the first time. You can reach Ribes de Freser on the R3 train as well, but with the works this winter it is easier by car.
Vallter 2000 and Port del Comte: small and not far
Vallter 2000 sits at the very end of the Camprodon valley, and the road up to it climbs above 2,000 metres. There are about 14 km of pistes, but the view from the top is worth the trip on its own.
Port del Comte is one of the closest resorts to Barcelona, under two hours via Manresa and Solsona. It has about 40 km of pistes. There is no train here, only the car.
Baqueira-Beret, the biggest resort in Spain
If La Molina is a weekend trip, Baqueira is more of a trip for several days. Over 170 km of pistes, more than any other resort in Spain. But it is a long drive, about four hours: either over the Bonaigua pass, which is closed in snowfall, or via Lleida and the Vielha tunnel. The season here has been announced for 28 November to 4 April.

There is no train; a direct ALSA bus runs from Barcelona to Vielha, then a local one to the slopes. Four hours in a car with skis: perfectly normal. Four hours on buses with skis: a test of character.
Espot, Port Ainé and Boí Taüll
West of La Molina, roughly three and a half hours from Barcelona, lie the Pallars and Boí valleys. Espot and Port Ainé are quiet family resorts. Boí Taüll tops out at 2,751 m. Last season ALSA ran ski buses to Espot and Port Ainé, but only from Lleida, so from Barcelona you would have to get there first anyway.
Tavascan used to be on this list too, but last season its ski area did not open: the lift failed its mandatory inspection. Whether it will open this winter is not yet known.
Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal in Andorra
Grandvalira is the biggest resort in the Pyrenees, with 215 km of pistes, and Pal Arinsal adds another 63 km. Andorra is about three hours away, and the season here has been announced well ahead: from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. Don't forget your passport or ID card: Andorra is not in the EU. We explain in detail which airport to choose and how to get there in our article on getting to Andorra.
Chains, passes and tunnels
In Spain, chains or winter tyres are needed wherever a road sign requires them. Andorra is stricter: from 1 November to 15 May winter tyres or chains are needed at all times. The Toses, Bonaigua and Envalira passes close in heavy snowfall, and the Cadí and Vielha tunnels help you get round them.
In winter the cars run on winter tyres, there are always chains in the boot, and the driver keeps an eye on the forecast and the passes. Your job: get a good night's sleep before your first day on the slopes. For skis and snowboards, choose a Van or a Bus when you book: a ski bag will not fit in a sedan.
Transfer to a ski resort
A transfer from Barcelona Airport to La Molina costs from €205 per car, to Baqueira from €354, to Andorra from €255, to Grandvalira from €266, to Arinsal from €268. Trip conditions and prices by class are on the route page.
Frequently asked questions
Which ski resort is closest to Barcelona?
La Molina, Masella and Port del Comte: each is about 150 km away, roughly two hours by car. The shortest distance is to Ribes de Freser, where the way up to Vall de Núria starts.
Can I get to a ski resort by train?
Yes, the R3 train runs to La Molina, and a resort bus goes from the station to the slopes. For Vall de Núria, take the R3 to Ribes de Freser and the rack railway from there. This winter there are works on the R3 line, so part of the way is by bus.
When does the 2026-2027 ski season start in Catalonia and Andorra?
Baqueira-Beret has announced an opening on 28 November, the Andorran resorts on 4 December. The other Catalan resorts usually open in late November or early December and confirm their dates in November.
Which is the biggest ski resort in Spain?
Baqueira-Beret, with over 170 km of pistes. It is about four hours from Barcelona by car.
How do I get to Vall de Núria?
Only by rack railway from Ribes de Freser or Queralbs; there is no road into the valley. You can reach Ribes by car or on the R3 train.
Do I need chains to drive to the mountains?
In Spain, wherever a sign requires them; winter tyres can be used instead. In Andorra winter tyres or chains are compulsory from 1 November to 15 May. Transfer cars run on winter tyres in winter, with chains always in the boot.
