Barcelona in August: What Stays Open and What Shuts
Locals leave on holiday, and a slice of the city's small businesses closes with them.
The big sights carry on as normal. The Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the museums and the main shopping streets keep their usual hours. What shuts is everyday Barcelona: family tapas bars, small bakeries, workshops, independent shops. They normally close for two or three weeks, most often between mid-August and the start of September.
If you know about it beforehand, nothing goes wrong. What stings is walking twenty minutes to a place you read about, only to find the shutters down and a note scrawled by hand.
The afternoon pause
Between roughly 14:00 and 17:00 the smaller shops close and the streets go quiet. Some of them open again in the evening and trade until 21:00 or later, and by then the streets fill up once more.
Plan the day around that and it runs more easily: museums and anything under a roof in the afternoon, streets and terraces in the evening.
The heat reshapes the day
In August the temperature sits above 30 degrees for days at a stretch, and the humidity makes it feel sharper still. Walking between the sights with luggage, or with small children in tow, is hard work.
The way out is to shorten the stretches you spend under open sky. Somewhere air-conditioned, a short ride, the next stop. Reach your hotel worn out after an hour in the sun and you've written off the rest of the day.
The airport in August
Barcelona Airport runs busier in August than in any other month. Queues at passport control stretch long and bags come off the belt slowly. The arrivals hall holds so many people that picking out someone you've never met takes real effort.
