Barcelona airport to the city centre: all 5 options compared
El Prat airport (BCN) sits 14 km from the centre of Barcelona. There are five ways in, and the right one depends on how many of you there are, how many suitcases you have and what time you land.

What the numbers hide
Per person or per car. On the train, the metro and the Aerobus you pay for every passenger. A taxi and a transfer are priced per car. For two people the metro comes to 11.80 €, the Aerobus 15.50 €, a taxi around 28 €. For four the metro is already 23.60 € and the Aerobus 31 €, while the transfer price does not depend on how many of you there are: from €58 per car whether you are two or four.
A taxi meter has a life of its own. 28 € is with a clear road. Fifteen minutes stuck on Gran Via adds about 7 €, and you find out the total at the end. On a Sunday evening or during a trade fair the same ride costs noticeably more.
Queues are not in the price. At the taxi rank in the morning rush you wait 20 to 40 minutes. At the same hour you cannot always board the first Aerobus that pulls in: it fills up within a couple of minutes and you wait for the next one.
Public transport takes you to a stop, not to your hotel. The Aerobus drops you at Plaça de Catalunya, the metro at Zona Universitaria. From there you still have to get to your address on foot with your luggage, and after a flight that is not much fun.
When public transport is the better choice
If you are travelling light, landing during the day and your hotel is near Plaça de Catalunya, the Aerobus gets you there for 7.75 € and leaves every five minutes. For one passenger with a backpack that is a sensible choice.
There is one thing about the metro that rarely gets written down. The 5.90 € airport ticket is not a paper stub. It is loaded onto a T-mobilitat card, which you have to buy from a machine first. The card is reusable and you can top it up later, but it is personal: one card per passenger. A family of four needs four cards, even travelling together.
The machines have a language option, but the order of steps is not obvious: first the card, then the fare, then the number of journeys. Puzzled people in front of the screen are a standard sight after a flight. Paying with a phone is not possible yet: TMB promises it, without giving a date.
When a transfer is worth it
It comes down to predictability. You see the amount before you fly - from €58 per car - and it does not depend on the traffic, the hour or the number of suitcases. The driver writes to you and names the exact meeting point, and takes you to your address rather than to the nearest stop.
It matters most in a few cases. There are four or more of you - the price splits between everyone and comes out level with the Aerobus, only without the changes. A night flight - the metro is shut and the driver is already there. Travelling with children - a child seat is free with us in every class, while Barcelona taxis carry none at all. Bulky luggage - with skis, a snowboard or a pushchair the metro is tight even at a quiet hour.
What is fixed and what is not
The transfer price is per car and is fixed when you book. Traffic, the hour and the number of suitcases do not change it. You see the figure before you confirm, and that is what you pay.
For an immediate booking the money is taken when the ride starts. For a booking made in advance the amount is held on the card at the time of booking and taken, again, when the ride starts.
Toll roads are not included in the fixed price and are paid separately. A scheduled transfer can be cancelled without penalty up to 24 hours before pickup.

Do Barcelona taxis have child seats? No. If you are travelling with small children a private transfer is more practical: the seat is included in the price in every class of car.
