Barcelona Airport to Salou: Every Way Compared

5 min readLet's GO Transfer

Salou sits 101 km down the coast from Barcelona airport. That is far enough that the way you cover it actually matters, and close enough that every option is on the table. Here is what each one is really like.

The distance nobody mentions on booking sites

The drive is 101 km and takes about 1 hr 07 minour 10 minutes without traffic. This is the number to hold on to, because most of the confusion about getting to Salou comes from people quoting the Barcelona city centre distance instead of the airport one.

There is a second airport much closer: Reus is 14 km from Salou, about 16 minutes by road. If you are still choosing flights and Salou is your destination, a flight into Reus removes an hour of ground travel, and the Reus airport to Salou route is a short one. Worth checking before you book the Barcelona ticket.

Train: least expensive, but not from the airport

There is no train from Barcelona airport to Salou. The route is airport to Barcelona Sants by Rodalies R2 Nord, then a regional train down the coast, then a short local hop from Salou station to your hotel.

Three legs, three sets of luggage handling, and a change at Sants which is a large station. If you are travelling light and unhurried, it works and it is the least expensive way. With two suitcases and a child, the changes are the part people underestimate.

Buy the ticket at the station rather than in advance: regional trains in Catalonia do not get cheaper when booked early, unlike long-distance ones.

Bus: direct in season, absent out of it

Seasonal coach services run from Barcelona airport towards the Costa Daurada in summer. When they run, they are straightforward: one vehicle, luggage in the hold, drop-off in central Salou.

The catch is the timetable. Services thin out from October and some stop entirely. If your flight lands late evening in November, check whether anything is actually running before you count on it.

Car hire: makes sense only if you will drive locally

Salou is walkable and PortAventura is 5.5 km away, about 12 minutes. If your holiday is beach, town and the park, a car spends the week in a hotel garage that you pay for.

Hire makes sense if you plan to drive along the coast: Cambrils, Tarragona (11.6 km, under 20 minutes), the wine country inland. Otherwise it is a cost without a use.

Private transfer: one vehicle, door to door

A driver meets your flight, your luggage goes in once, and you arrive at your hotel entrance. No changes, no timetable, no queue.

What matters more than the ride itself is what happens when the flight is late. The driver tracks the flight and adjusts to the new landing time, and the first 60 minutes after touchdown are free, which covers passport control and baggage reclaim even on a bad day. Child seats are included at no charge, in any vehicle class. The Barcelona airport to Salou page has the calculator, so you can see the price for your dates before deciding.

The honest limit: for one person travelling light in July, the train and a short local ride will cost less. For two adults with suitcases, or anyone arriving with children after a delayed flight, the arithmetic changes.

Getting around once you are there

PortAventura is 5.5 km from central Salou, about 12 minutes by road. Cambrils is 10 km along the coast. Tarragona, with its Roman amphitheatre above the sea, is 11.6 km and under 20 minutes. Reus, birthplace of Gaudi, is 14 km inland.

All of these are close enough that you do not need a car parked for the week. You need transport four or five times, which is a different problem. Single rides from the city are on the Barcelona to Salou page, and every route we cover is in the directions catalogue.
