Girona lies two and a half times closer to Lloret than Barcelona. The drive from there follows the C-35 and C-63 through the hills of La Selva: none of the traffic you get around Barcelona, and no coastal hairpins.
Barcelona Airport has a different advantage: many times more flights land there. Girona is a low-cost base, and from plenty of cities there's no direct flight to it at all.

What the place is like
Hotel Anabel stands in the centre of Lloret, at Carrer del Poeta Felicià Serra Mont 10. It's a resort-style hotel with two hundred and thirty-three rooms.

Buses. From Girona, Sagalés line 613 runs straight to Lloret: €12 one way, €19 return, from June to October, with the timetable matched to Ryanair arrivals. From Barcelona Airport, Moventis line 2 goes through the city to Lloret and on to Tossa - also direct, though the timetable shifts, so check it before you fly.
Train. Between Girona and Lloret there's no railway at all. From Barcelona there's no direct train either: the airport to Sants station, a Rodalies commuter train to Blanes, then a bus. Two changes, around two and a half hours.
Taxi. At both airports the rank sits by the terminal, and you pay by the meter. No fixed fare, so you learn the total at the end of the ride.
Girona Airport is small: about a hundred metres from the exit of the hall to the bus stands, and there's nowhere to get lost. In Barcelona the walk to the Moventis stop takes longer, and both terminals have signs.
The bus from Girona costs less than a transfer: a ticket runs €12 per person, while a transfer covers the whole car and costs from €58. The difference lies elsewhere. The bus keeps to a timetable and drops you at a stop; your driver comes for your flight and takes you to the hotel.
A late arrival narrows the choice. Bus timetables aren't built around night flights, and nobody wants to hunt for a taxi after dark at an airport they don't know.
What Lloret and the area offer
Lloret has more hotels than any other resort on the Costa Brava. There are three main beaches: central Lloret, Fenals beyond the headland and Santa Cristina in its cove. Between them run the Camins de Ronda, the coastal paths along the cliffs.
In town: the Santa Clotilde gardens on the clifftop above the sea, the church of Sant Romà and the Can Garriga maritime museum. For children: the Water World aqua park and go-karting.
Neighbouring Tossa de Mar, twenty minutes' drive from Lloret, has a medieval fortress right on the shore - one of the few still standing on the Catalan coast.
