Tossa de Mar lies on the Costa Brava, 35 km south-east of Girona airport. No train runs here, and until the end of December the 613 bus only goes as far as Tossa on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, once a day. What awaits you in Tossa de Mar
The seven towers of the Vila Vella. Four large towers and three round ones stand around the old town. The walls were built in the early 13th century to keep out pirates, and in 1931 the Vila Vella was declared a historic and artistic monument.
A shallow cove on Mar Menuda beach. If you are travelling with small children, head for Mar Menuda: at the northern end of the beach there is a quiet, shallow cove. Like the main beach, Platja Gran, it has a Blue Flag for 2026-2027.
Steps down to Es Codolar beach. The small beach below the fortress walls, 33 by 27 metres, can only be reached on foot, down a flight of steps. The tourist office's southern coastal route brings you here in about an hour, a 3 km walk.
On 20 January Tossa sees off its pilgrim. Every year on this day the Pare Pelegrí walks on behalf of the town to Santa Coloma de Farners, 40 km away, and comes back the next day. The vow was made in the 15th century, during the plague, and the tradition has never been broken since. If you land in Girona by 20 January, the day is worth catching.
A Roman villa older than the fortress. People lived at the Els Ametllers villa from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD, and its mosaics and baths survive. Ask the Casa de Cultura for visiting hours: the tourist office website does not give them.
Chagall at the town museum, but later. The Tossa museum, opened in 1935, holds works by artists who lived here in the 1930s, Marc Chagall among them. The building is now closed for renovation, and no reopening date has been given yet.
