What awaits you in Tarragona

The amphitheatre stands right above the beach. Almost two thousand years ago gladiators fought here, and today you can see the sea from the upper rows. Miracle beach lies directly below the amphitheatre.

The Roman circus survives beneath the streets of the old town. It was built at the end of the first century, under Domitian: 325 metres long, a venue for chariot races. Part of the stands and the underground galleries are open to visitors.

The whole archaeological ensemble is protected by UNESCO. Besides the amphitheatre and the circus, the forum, the city walls and the Ferreres aqueduct outside town have survived: two tiers of arches, 217 metres long and 27 high.

The Balcony of the Mediterranean: the viewpoint at the end of the Rambla. It sits above the cliff that drops to the sea, with a railing designed by Ramon Salas i Ricomà, 1889. The locals have a tradition called tocar ferro: walking along the Rambla to the balcony and touching the iron.

Tarragona: a port city, not just a resort. It has a university, a cargo and cruise port and a life of its own beyond tourism. In the second half of September the city spends two weeks celebrating Santa Tecla, its biggest festival.

Salou and PortAventura are close by. From Reus airport to the park is 14 km and ~19 min, to Salou 13 km and ~21 min.

About the road. From Reus airport it is 10 km and ~16 min on the T‑11 Reus ring road and the A‑7 dual carriageway, with no toll sections. It is one of the shortest routes in the catalogue.
