Central Barcelona to Port-Leucate is 219 km, and the drive takes ~2 hr 40 min. Port-Leucate sits on a narrow spit between the sea and the saltwater Salses-Leucate lagoon. People come for fresh oysters, sold straight at the farms along the lagoon, and for the steady wind for kiting. In summer the beaches are roomy, and it only gets crowded in August.

Leucate: oysters, kite and the beaches below the cape
Oysters straight from the farms. The Salses-Leucate lagoon is one of the main places in the south of France for farming oysters and mussels. The farms line the shore, and you can eat the oysters right there, at tables by the pontoons. A dozen costs less than in a restaurant on the seafront.
Wind for kiting. The Tramontane blows here most of the year, which is why Leucate counts as one of the best kitesurfing spots in the Mediterranean. In April the town hosts the Mondial du Vent, a stop on the world tour. Kiters and windsurfers come to it from all over Europe.
Three different Leucates. Port-Leucate is the marina and the newer blocks, Leucate-Village the old village on a hill among the vineyards, and Leucate-Plage and La Franqui the beaches under the cliff of the cape. A few kilometres sit between them. Give the exact address when you book.
La Franqui beach. A wide sandy beach under a rocky cliff, with shallow water close in, which is why families with children come here. Kiters ride further to the left, where the wind is steadier.
The Fitou vineyards. The Fitou vineyards start just beyond the lagoon. Fitou was the first red-wine appellation in Languedoc, and many of the estates take visitors for tastings. A good reason to leave the road to a driver.
