What awaits you in Figueres
Dalí built the Dalí Theatre-Museum himself. The artist spent twenty years rebuilding the former town theatre and turned it into a work of his own. A roof of giant eggs, walls of golden loaves, a car with rain inside in the courtyard.
Dalí is buried right here. The crypt is beneath the theatre stage, right in the centre of the museum. The artist was born in Figueres and asked to be buried in his own museum.
Worth buying tickets in advance. It is one of the most visited museums in Spain. In season the queue wraps around the building; an e-ticket saves an hour.
Sant Ferran castle on the edge of town. The largest eighteenth-century fortress in Europe, more than thirty hectares of bastions. Hardly any tourists, although it is open to visitors.
Cadaqués an hour away. The seaside village where Dalí spent most of his life; his house in Portlligat is open as a museum.
