Cadaqués is a white town on Cap de Creus, 170 km from Barcelona and ~2 hr 18 min away. Salvador Dalí lived here, and his house-museum in neighbouring Portlligat is open for timed visits.
Getting there is difficult by design: the only road goes over a mountain pass with steep hairpins, the bus runs two or three times a day and takes over three hours with a change in Figueres. That very inaccessibility is what kept the town the way it is. The driver collects you at your door and takes you straight to the address.

What awaits you in Cadaqués
The only road runs through the mountains. Cadaqués is cut off from the coast by the Cap de Creus massif, and the only way in is the winding road over the pass. That is why the village has not been built up with hotels.
White houses and black slate streets. Whitewash is compulsory under local rules, so the whole centre is one colour. The streets are paved with pebbles set on edge; comfortable shoes are a good idea.
Dalí's house in Portlligat. The artist lived here for over forty years and the house is kept as it was: the studio, a stuffed bear in the hall, a phallus-shaped pool. Entry strictly by appointment, in groups of eight.
Cap de Creus, the easternmost point of mainland Spain. A natural park of jagged rocks and a lighthouse. Dalí said these stones taught him surrealism.
Coves instead of sandy beaches. The shore is rocky, the water clear. The beach in the centre is pebbly, and the quiet coves are reached on foot or by boat.
About the road. From Barcelona 170 km, ~2 hr 18 min. From Figueres there are another forty kilometres or so of mountain road over the pass.
