To the Penedès with a driver
The Penedès is Catalonia's main wine region, 59 km from Barcelona and ~53 min away. Cava is made here by the traditional method, and most estates welcome visitors for a tour and a tasting.
The main argument for a transfer here is simple: tasting does not go with driving. By public transport the R4 train goes to Vilafranca del Penedès, but the wineries are scattered around the countryside, and from the station it is still several kilometres to reach them. The driver collects you at your door and takes you straight to the address.

What awaits you in the Penedès
This is where cava is made. The Penedès is Catalonia's main wine country and the birthplace of Spanish sparkling wine. The method is the same as in Champagne: second fermentation in the bottle, at least nine months on the lees.
The cellars go several storeys underground. The big producers in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia run tours through underground galleries where the temperature stays constant all year. Some even have a train running inside.
Small estates are more interesting than big ones. Family wineries take visitors by appointment, show you everything themselves and pour more generously. Tastings are paid; check the price with the estate when you book.
The grapes are picked in August and September. At that time the cellars are noisy and smell of must, but the tours go on. Spring and autumn are quieter and prettier: the vines are either budding or turning yellow.
Vilafranca del Penedès is the capital of the region. A town with a wine museum, and at the end of August human towers are built there: castells eight or nine levels high.
