Transfer from Barcelona to the Ebro Delta
171 km to the south, ~1 hr 56 min. The road follows the coastal motorway past Tarragona and turns off towards the river mouth.
Public transport is awkward here. The train goes as far as L'Aldea-Amposta-Tortosa station, and from there buses across the delta are rare and do not go to the places worth the trip: the viewpoints, the lagoons, the beaches. The driver collects you at your door and takes you straight to the address.

What awaits you in the delta
This is the largest wetland in Catalonia, three hundred and twenty square kilometres of rice fields, canals and lagoons that grew where the river meets the sea.
The rice changes the view with the seasons. In spring the fields are flooded and turn into a mirror reflecting the sky. In summer it is solid green, and in September everything turns gold before the harvest.
The lagoons are home to flamingos - several thousand birds, here all year round. The viewing platforms stand by the Encanyissada and Tancada lagoons. Besides flamingos there are herons, stilts and more than three hundred bird species.
Along the banks survive the barraca - whitewashed huts with reed roofs where the rice farmers used to live.
