Barcelona to the Ebro Delta

Transfer from Barcelona to the Ebro Delta

The delta is three hundred and twenty square kilometres of flat land where the river meets the sea, and it is spread out. Deltebre, Sant Carles de la Rapita, Riumar and the lagoons are half an hour apart from each other, with rice fields in between and few buses across them.

From Barcelona it is a hundred and seventy kilometres, about two and a half hours. The train reaches the edge of the delta at L'Aldea or Amposta, and from there you need a local connection or a car to get anywhere inside it.

What you'll find in the delta

It looks like nowhere else in Catalonia: no hills, no cliffs, just water, reeds and rice. The colour changes with the season. Flooded mirror in spring, solid green through summer, gold at the September harvest, and bare brown water again in winter.

The lagoons are the reason birdwatchers come. Encanyissada and Tancada hold flamingos most of the year, along with herons, avocets and terns, and the hides around them are simple wooden platforms rather than a visitor centre.

The food is rice and shellfish, unsurprisingly: mussels and oysters are farmed in the bays, and the local rice dishes are cooked with eel and duck as often as with seafood. Riumar and Trabucador are long empty beaches at the ends of sandbars.

Getting there: the options

By train. Regional services stop at L'Aldea-Amposta on the edge, and from the station you still need a car to reach the villages and the lagoons.

By coach. Long-distance buses serve Amposta and Tortosa, and local connections into the delta are sparse, particularly outside summer.

By hire car. Practical here, since distances inside the park are real. The drive down is the dull part.

By private transfer. Two and a half hours door to door, and the driver can take you between the villages during the day rather than leaving you at one.

Practical notes for the delta

Distances inside the park are deceptive. Deltebre to Riumar is twenty minutes, Deltebre to Sant Carles de la Rapita around forty. Plan two or three stops in a day rather than five.

Mosquitoes are part of the place in summer, especially at dusk near the rice fields. Repellent, and long sleeves in the evening.

Bring binoculars if the birds are the point. The flamingos are usually far out on the lagoons rather than beside the path.

September is the harvest. The fields turn gold and the machines are out, which is the most photographed fortnight of the delta year.

Frequently asked questions

Does the train go into the delta?

How long is the drive from Barcelona?

About two and a half hours on the AP-7 and the N-340.

Can the driver take us between the villages?

Yes. Tell us the plan when booking; waiting and internal legs are agreed before the trip so the price is known in advance.

When are the flamingos there?

Most of the year on the Encanyissada and Tancada lagoons. Bring binoculars, they are usually well out on the water.

What is the best month to see the rice fields?

The flooded fields are at their most striking in spring, and the harvest turns everything gold in September.

Are there mosquitoes?

In summer, yes, particularly at dusk near the fields. Repellent and long sleeves in the evening.

Do you carry child seats?

Yes, free of charge. Add the option when you book.

Is the price per person?

No, per car. The fare covers the vehicle and everyone in it, up to capacity.

Can you collect us from a hotel in Barcelona?

Yes, from any address. The driver waits fifteen minutes free at the pickup.

Are tolls included?

No. Tolls are not included in the fare and are added if the route uses them.
