Barcelona to Besalu and La Garrotxa

The bridge is the reason people come. Seven irregular arches with a fortified gate in the middle, angled where it crosses the Fluvia, rebuilt after the civil war from photographs of the original. It looks improvised because it is: the piers stand on whatever rock the riverbed offered.

Behind it the old town is compact and largely medieval, with arcaded squares and two Romanesque churches. The unusual survival is the mikvah, a Jewish ritual bath from the twelfth century cut into the rock by the river. Very few remain anywhere in Europe.

Fifteen minutes further is La Garrotxa, a volcanic zone with forty cones under beech and oak. The Fageda d'en Jorda is a beech wood growing on an old lava flow, flat and green and strange.

By bus. Direct coaches run from Barcelona towards Olot and stop at Besalu, taking a little over two hours each way. Departures are spread thinly through the day, so the last return often sets the plan.

By train and bus. No station in the town, so this means a train north and a connecting bus, with a wait in between.

By tour. Coach tours combine Besalu with the volcanoes, which works if the schedule suits you and does not if you want longer in one place.

By private transfer. An hour and a half each way, and the driver waits while you walk. You decide when to leave and whether to add the volcano park on the way back.

Besalu is small. Two hours covers the bridge, the old town and the mikvah without hurrying. Most people underestimate this and overestimate the town.

The volcanoes are the other half. Santa Pau, the Croscat crater and the Fageda beech wood are all within half an hour and turn a short visit into a full day. Walking shoes rather than sandals.

Waiting is arranged in advance. Fifteen minutes are free at any address; beyond that waiting is charged by time and agreed before the trip, so a five hour visit with a return leg is a normal booking rather than a special case.

Weekdays are quieter. The bridge is the single most photographed thing in the area and Sunday mornings show it.
