What awaits you in Valencia

A 15th-century Silk Exchange on the UNESCO list. The Lonja de la Seda was built between 1482 and 1533 for the silk trade, which is where its name comes from. Since 1996 the Exchange has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the Trading Hall the vaults rest on twisted columns almost 16 metres high. The main entrance of the Exchange faces Plaza del Mercado, and the Central Market stands opposite.

The Central Market is open until 15:00. The market opens Monday to Saturday from 7:30 to 15:00 and is closed on Sundays. Its sections include poultry, fish and seafood. If you land in Alicante on a Saturday afternoon, leave the market for Monday: by the time you reach Valencia, it will already be closed.

Nine kilometres of gardens in the old bed of the Turia. In the 1970s the river was diverted away from the city, and in 1986 gardens opened in the old riverbed. They stretch for 9 km from Cabecera Park to the City of Arts and Sciences, and 18 bridges cross them. Running and cycling paths follow the riverbed, so you can walk or ride through the gardens across almost the whole city.

Opera, IMAX and an aquarium at the City of Arts and Sciences. The complex was designed by Santiago Calatrava. It has an opera house, an IMAX 3D cinema, an interactive museum and the Oceanogràfic aquarium. The complex stands at the eastern end of the Turia gardens, so a walk along the riverbed can end right here.

The Fallas from 15 to 19 March. On these days Valencia celebrates the Fallas, a festival on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2016. On the evening of 19 March, Saint Joseph's Day, the figures are burned, and that night is called La Cremà. In 2027 the main days fall in the week from Monday 15 March to Friday 19 March. If you are flying to the Fallas via Alicante, book your transfer as soon as you buy your tickets.

The Albufera lagoon and its rice fields. South of Valencia lies the Albufera Natural Park: a freshwater lagoon linked to the sea by channels. More than 350 bird species can be seen here. Rice fields stretch around the lagoon, and boat trips on the lagoon run in traditional boats, some of them under a lateen sail. While you are in the park, try all i pebre, an eel dish. A stop at the Albufera can be added when you book, and it is factored into the price.
