Two cities joined by a park in a dry riverbed. In 1957 Valencia flooded, the Turia was diverted south of the city, and the empty bed was turned into nine kilometres of gardens - from the Cabecera park in the west all the way to the sea. Walk east along them and the city changes beneath you: you start at the medieval Serranos towers and finish among the white concrete shells of the City of Arts and Sciences - museums, an opera house and an oceanarium that Santiago Calatrava built where the water used to flow.

The old centre is denser than the map suggests. The Central Market - a Modernista hall of cast iron and tiles where hundreds of stalls sell produce every morning - stands opposite the Lonja de la Seda, the fifteenth-century silk exchange with its twisted stone columns, on the UNESCO list. Behind them is El Carmen, a tangle of lanes where the bars are concentrated, and the cathedral holds a chapel with the chalice that is regarded here as the Holy Grail.

How it differs from other seaside cities. Valencia has both a working city and a real beach: Malvarrosa and Las Arenas are wide urban sand a few minutes' drive away, and behind them is Cabanyal, the old fishermen's quarter of low tiled houses. To the south lies the Albufera lagoon with its rice fields - paella comes from there, and it is still cooked over wood. For a rainy day the Oceanogràfic and the Science Museum together will take several hours.

From the airport the road is short: about 11 km, ~21 min.
