Neither the train nor the tram serves the airport: only the C6 bus with stops, and then a walk from the stop to the hotel. What awaits you in Alicante
A city built around a single rock. Santa Bárbara castle stands on Mount Benacantil directly above the old town: its oldest part is the tower on the summit, the lower walls are eighteenth century. You can climb up on foot, but most people take the lift cut inside the mountain, from the road opposite Postiguet beach. Further down the slope lies the Santa Cruz quarter - small whitewashed houses, narrow staircases and tubs of flowers.
The Explanada is the city's living room. The palm-lined promenade along the port is paved with roughly 6.5 million marble tiles in a wave of red, cream and black, and Alicante takes its evening stroll here rather than where the tourists go. Postiguet, the city beach, is right in the centre under the castle and therefore a bit cramped; the long one is San Juan, a few kilometres north, and it is far wider.
A good place to leave from, and a good place to stay. From the port a boat takes about an hour to Tabarca, a tiny island ringed by walls, Spain's first marine reserve, with clear water and a single village. In the city itself the MARQ archaeological museum fills a wet evening, and the Central Market and the bar streets of El Barrio fill an ordinary one. Unlike Benidorm and Torrevieja, beneath the visitors here there is always a living city.
