A town that stands on salt, not on tourism. Torrevieja lived between the sea and two lagoons long before anyone came for the beach, and salt is still harvested here. The old loading pier, the Eras de la Sal of 1777, survives on the seafront and works as a concert venue, and the museum of the sea and salt tells the story of the trade that paid for all this. In the fishing harbour lies the decommissioned submarine S-61 Delfín, which you can go inside - it is part of the floating museum.
The pink lagoon is what most people turn off for. The Torrevieja salt lagoon turns pink from the algae and tiny crustaceans that live in its brine - brightest in the warm months and in sunshine - while its sister at La Mata stays green and holds the birds. Both lie in the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja natural park, with hides for birdwatching, marked walking and cycling loops, and in the migration season flamingos by the hundred.
It is not like the resorts further north. This is the flat, dry southern end of the Costa Blanca, with a large permanent foreign community and Spanish weekend crowds rather than package tourists. The central El Cura beach is small and busy; La Mata to the north is a long strip of sand behind dunes. The Dique de Levante breakwater, 1,600 metres long, gives you an evening walk right above the water.
