What awaits you in Altea
Those postcard blue domes. The church of Mare de Déu del Consol stands at the top of the old town: two domes clad in glazed blue-and-white ceramic above a square of whitewashed houses - the image people take home from this coast more than any other. Around it the old quarter winds up cobbled, steep, deliberately narrow lanes with sudden views of the bay, and behind the town to the north stands the Sierra de Bernia ridge.
The beaches here are pebble, and that is a trade-off. There is no golden sand in Altea: La Roda runs along the promenade in the centre, Cap Negret and L'Olla stretch north beyond the marina. Pebbles mean noticeably clearer water - a joy for swimmers and snorkellers - and a need for beach shoes. The walk along the shore between the marina and the old town is the whole of flat Altea; everything else is uphill.
Quieter than its neighbours, by choice. Benidorm's towers are twenty minutes along the coast and visible from the headland, but Altea stayed low-rise and drew artists and craftspeople; the upper streets are taken up by small galleries and workshops. The Palau Altea theatre runs all year, and on the Saturday nearest 10 August the Castell de l'Olla puts on a big fireworks display over the sea from L'Olla beach, watched from the sand and from boats.
From the airport it is 70 km, ~59 min heading north. The streets of the old town are steep and almost all closed to cars, so the drop-off point matters more here than in most towns.
