What awaits you in Calpe
One rock defines the whole town. The Peñón de Ifach rises 332 metres straight out of the sea on its own isthmus and is visible from half the Costa Blanca. It is also Spain's smallest natural park - 45 hectares - and you can climb it: the trail is free, but numbers are limited, so you get a permit in advance. And honestly: the upper section goes through a tunnel cut into the rock, then over bare stone with chains. Two hours there and back, in proper shoes, and it is not a stroll.
The rock splits the coast in two. To the north lies La Fossa, also called Levante - a long sandy beach under the high-rises; to the south Arenal-Bol curves along the promenade to the old fishing port, and at the very foot of the rock hides the small sheltered Racó. At the northern end are the Baños de la Reina, a Roman villa of the second to fifth centuries, where fish tanks and pools were cut into the flat rock at the water's edge, and you can walk over them.
Behind the seafront the town is older than it looks. The Calpe salt lagoon, a working saltworks since Roman times, lies right behind the coastal blocks and holds flamingos almost all year - pink birds against high-rises look strange and good. Higher up the slope the old quarter has kept its medieval street grid and painted walls, and at the fish market in the port the catch is auctioned in the late afternoon.
