What awaits you in Marbella
Behind the resort stands a real old town. Almost all of the Costa del Sol grew out of fishing villages; Marbella kept its village. Behind the promenade lies the Plaza de los Naranjos, laid out in the fifteenth century after the Christian conquest: orange trees, low houses, and a couple of streets away pieces of the Moorish fortress wall and lanes no car can get down.
Ten bronze Dalís on the way to the beach. The Avenida del Mar, a marble walkway from the Alameda park to the sea, carries ten sculptures by Salvador Dalí right in the open air, among fountains, and you can walk past them at any hour for free. Beyond, the promenade runs for kilometres in both directions, past Fontanilla and Venus beaches in the centre and out to the Golden Mile, and the coastal walkway now reaches almost to the neighbouring towns.
Where it sits between its neighbours. Puerto Banús, ten minutes to the west, is a marina with shops and no old town; Estepona, further along the coast, is quieter and more homely. Marbella has both sides, which is why families most often stay right here. Behind the town stands La Concha, 1,215 metres in the Sierra Blanca - a full day's walk from the Juanar refuge - and in the rain the museum of contemporary Spanish engraving in the old town fills a dry hour.
