What awaits you in Puerto Banús
A marina built from nothing in 1970. José Banús opened the harbour in May of that year on a bare shore and conceived it as an Andalusian village around the water rather than a row of hotels - which is why the whitewashed blocks step back from the quays instead of looming over them. Half a century on it is one of the liveliest spots on the coast, and the boats along the quay grow noticeably bigger the closer you get to the harbour mouth.
Everything happens on the Muelle Ribera. The front line of the quay is restaurants, terraces and shop windows facing the water; the street behind it is calmer, and eating there is cheaper. The core of the harbour is pedestrian and easy to walk, and the lighthouse at the entrance is the usual evening loop. Levante beach lies just beyond the breakwater to the east, Nueva Andalucía to the west, both a few minutes from the quays.
Know what this is and what it is not. There is no historic centre here at all - for that you go to old Marbella, six kilometres east along the seafront, a little over an hour on foot. Behind the marina, in the Nueva Andalucía valley, the golf begins: several courses over a couple of square kilometres, and right behind them the mountains rise. The nightlife is long, and in July and August the harbour does not empty until well past midnight.
