What awaits you in Benalmádena
More than 1,100 berths in Puerto Marina. Benalmádena's harbour is called Puerto Marina, and it has more than 1,100 berths for yachts and boats. White houses with turrets and domes stand around the harbour. During the day you can take a pleasure boat from the quay along the coast, and in the evening have dinner at one of the restaurants on the waterfront.
Arroyo de la Miel beach for families with children. Benalmádena's beaches stretch for more than nine kilometres. For families, the recommended beach is Arroyo de la Miel: it is 300 metres long, with a sandy bottom and calm water. The beach is equipped for people with reduced mobility, so there are walkways down to the water, adapted toilets and assistants to help with bathing.
Bil-Bil Castle by the beach was built as a summer house. The red Arab-style building was commissioned in 1930 by the Hermann family and designed by the architect Enrique Atencia. Its name comes from the next owners, the American Scherstrom family: it is made up of the initials of their first names. In the early 1980s the town council bought the building, and today the castle hosts exhibitions, concerts and civil weddings.
15 minutes in a cabin to the top of Calamorro. The lower cable car station is in the centre of Arroyo de la Miel. The ride up in a four-person cabin takes 15 minutes, and the upper station stands at 720 metres. On a clear day you can see the Sierra Nevada, Gibraltar and even the coast of Africa from the summit, and up there falconers from the Valle de las Águilas foundation put on flying displays with birds of prey. The cable car may close in bad weather, so before you go, call +34 952 577 773 to check that it is running.
The 33-metre Enlightenment Stupa. The old village of Benalmádena Pueblo sits at 241 metres, 2.7 km from the sea. A 15-minute walk from its centre stands a white stupa with a golden cone on top. It was opened on 5 October 2003 at the initiative of the Bhutanese Buddhist teacher Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche. Inside there is a meditation hall, and any visitor can go in.
Colomares Castle took seven years to build. Also beyond the historic centre of the village stands Colomares Castle, a monument to Christopher Columbus. It was built from 1987 to 1994 by a doctor, Esteban Martín Martín, together with two stonemasons from Mijas. Columbus's three ships, the "Pinta", the "Niña" and the "Santa María", are built into the castle walls. A visit takes about an hour and a half, and you can read the story of every corner on your phone using the 17 QR codes along the route.
