What awaits you in Fuengirola
A town that does not shut down in February. Fuengirola is one of the few places on this coast that does not empty out in October. A large foreign community lives here side by side with the Spanish town, so the market, the hairdressers and the everyday bars stay open out of season. The Cercanías suburban train line runs through the town - a rarity on the Costa del Sol, which makes the neighbouring coast reachable without a car.
A strip of sand along the whole town, about eight kilometres. It starts under Sohail castle at the western end, runs through the wide central beach and Los Boliches, where the sunbeds thin out and Spanish families take over the shore, and ends at Carvajal on the border with Benalmádena. The promenade keeps you company the whole way, so you can walk it end to end without leaving the seafront.
How it differs from its neighbours. Marbella, half an hour to the west, is dressed up; Torremolinos, closer to the airport, is loud after dark. Fuengirola lies between them and remains the practical family choice. Sohail castle, a tenth-century Moorish fortress on the headland above the river mouth, is the real thing and not a reconstruction, and entry costs next to nothing; the Bioparc in the middle of town is a zoo without bars that rescues a wet day.
