Transfer Málaga Airport - Nerja

Here the mountains come down to the sea. Nerja stands at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, in the Axarquía district, and the geography changes here. The Sierra Almijara comes right down to the water, so instead of a flat strip of sand the town stands on cliffs with coves cut into them. Its centre of gravity is the Balcón de Europa: a palm-lined viewing terrace pushed out onto a rocky headland where a coastal fortress once stood, with open sea on three sides.

The beaches here are small and separate. Burriana is the main one, a proper cove east of the centre, with chiringuitos at the back and room for a whole day. Calahonda and Carabeo are pockets of sand reached by staircases down from the old town: quieter, but with almost no shade. Further east the shore becomes the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, a protected stretch of cliffs and hidden coves, one of the last unbuilt pieces of this coast.

How it differs from the western resorts. The towers never reached here, so the old town has kept its low white houses and narrow lanes. The Nerja caves, a system of huge chambers with prehistoric paintings, are the standing answer to bad weather. Frigiliana, a white village six kilometres up the slope, is the usual half-day trip, and in summer people walk up the Río Chíllar gorge ankle-deep in cold water almost the whole way.

From the airport this is the long eastern road, not the western one: about 72 km, ~1 hr.
