A castle on the rock where the Júcar meets the sea. Cullera is built around the Muntanya de les Raboses, a limestone hill that drops almost into the river mouth. The castle at the top dates back to the ninth and tenth centuries; in 1239 it was taken by James I, and later it guarded this coast against Berber raids; today it houses the municipal museum of history and archaeology. The climb of some 230 metres from the town pays off with a view over the beaches, the river delta and the rice fields inland, and the summit is shared between the castle and the sanctuary of the Virgin of the Castle.
Three different kinds of beach. San Antonio is a long straight town beach with the promenade behind it. Beyond the headland, by the Cullera lighthouse built in 1858 on the easternmost point, the shore breaks up into rocky coves like El Racó. And the Estany de Cullera lagoon lies so still that families with small children use it as a natural pool.
How it differs from its neighbours. Gandía to the south is flat and built up with hotels; Cullera has height, a compact old centre at the foot of the hill and the river itself - a walking path runs along the Júcar from the sea inland. By the lighthouse, the Cova del Dragut, named after the corsair who sacked the town in 1550, has been turned into a small pirate museum, and the Aquopolis water park takes care of the hot afternoon hours.
