What awaits you in Sitges
Seventeen beaches on three kilometres of shore. The church of Sant Bartomeu and Santa Tecla stands on the rock between the Ribera and Sant Sebastià beaches. It is the tallest building in town and the main landmark when you are looking for the way to the old town.
The old town lies behind the church, on the La Punta headland. Narrow alleys, small squares, houses of two or three storeys. You can walk round it in an hour.
At the end of the nineteenth century artists took to Sitges. Santiago Rusiñol bought two fishermen's houses here and joined them into a studio. Today it is the Cau Ferrat museum, with Maricel next door - both five minutes from the beach, and one ticket covers both.
The February carnival and the October film festival. In those weeks the town fills completely: rooms are booked months ahead, and traffic backs up at the entrance.
The sea here is warmer than on the Costa Brava. Sitges is sheltered from the north wind by the Garraf massif. People swim from May to October: in September the water holds at around twenty-five degrees, in October around twenty-two.
