Barcelona Airport to Begur

The old centre is built around the castle hill, and the streets below it are lined with what locals call cases d'indians: large houses built in the nineteenth century by villagers who made money in Cuba and came home. Colonial verandas and palm trees in a Catalan hill town look odd until you know why they are there.

The coves each have their own character. Sa Riera is the largest and the easiest to reach. Aiguablava and Fornells sit in a sheltered bay with clear water over pale sand. Sa Tuna and Aiguafreda are small, pebbly and quiet. Between them run the cami de ronda coastal paths, cut into the cliffs by customs patrols and now walked for the views.

By train and bus. A regional train to Flaca or Girona, then a bus that takes over an hour and runs a handful of times a day. Three legs, two waits, and the last stop is the town square.

By coach. Direct summer services exist from Barcelona but not from the terminals, and the schedule thins outside July and August.

By hire car. Fine for the drive, awkward on arrival: parking at the coves is limited, some approach roads are single track, and in August the cove car parks fill by mid morning.

By private transfer. Door to your address, whether that is in the town or down at Aiguablava, with the luggage in the boot rather than on your knees.

Tell us the exact address when you book, not just Begur. The difference between the town square and Sa Tuna is fifteen minutes of switchbacks, and some of the lanes down to the water are too tight for a large van.

If you are eight people with luggage heading to a cove, say so at booking. We will send a vehicle that fits the road rather than one that has to stop at the top and make you walk down with the cases.

For the return leg, allow more time than the map suggests in July and August: the coast road out of Begur is slow when everyone leaves at once.
